For use with 3/8-16 hardware, these six-prong nuts have a 1" diameter flange, 7/16" barrel height, 5/16" prong height and a recommended 29/64" pre-drill.

A t-nut is a fastener with a flanged barrel and sharp prongs that embed in wood or composite material, giving a permanent threaded insert that won't spin loose the way a plain nut can.
Drill a 29/64" pilot hole, then press or tap the flange down until it sits flush and the six prongs bite into the surface. These six-prong t-nuts (3/8-16 thread) then accept a 3/8-16 bolt or knob without further prep.
Back the workpiece with a scrap block and tap the flange in with a hammer so the prongs seat evenly without splitting the grain around the hole. Drive it flush before threading in a bolt, since prying it out afterward can tear the wood fibers.
