British pudding is a sweet or savory dish that rather than baked in the oven is steamed on the stovetop to give it a rich, tender texture. Traditional recipes include sticky toffee, treacle sponge and figgy pudding, commonly served with a sauce or custard.
Mason Cash has manufactured pudding basins for over 200 years, and the design for this version has remained largely unchanged for over a century. Every year, the British royal family presents Christmas puddings to their staff in these bowls.
Made of durable earthenware to withstand high temperatures, this pudding basin features an exaggerated rim designed to secure a parchment and foil cover with string during steaming. A second piece of string can be tied to create a makeshift handle for safely lifting the basin in and out of hot water. Its unique vented base allows bubbles to escape from the bottom, preventing the basin from rocking as the water boils around it. Once the pudding is cooked, the classic bowl shape ensures an easy release.
Although designed for pudding, the basin can also be used as a mixing bowl or serving dish, and measures about 7 3/4" in diameter with a 1.75 litre (1.9 quart) capacity. Microwave and dishwasher safe.
