Oils

An oil finish protects wood while preserving its natural appearance and feel. Unlike film-forming finishes that build a protective layer on the surface, oil finishes penetrate the wood fibers, enriching color and figure while allowing the texture of the wood to remain evident. They are valued for their straightforward application, ease of maintenance and ability to highlight rather than conceal the character of the wood. Our selection includes two broad categories: drying oils and hard wax oils. Both enhance the appearance of wood and are easier to renew than film finishes, but they differ in the level of protection they provide. Drying oils include traditional finishes such as tung oil, linseed oil and walnut oil, as well as oil/wax blends and resin-enhanced formulations. These finishes penetrate deeply, enrich grain and color, and are easy to refresh with additional coats as needed. They are a good choice for furniture, turnings, kitchenware and other projects where a natural appearance is the primary goal. Hard wax oils combine penetrating oils with durable waxes to provide greater resistance to water, staining and everyday wear. They are often chosen for table tops, countertops, cabinetry, flooring and other high-use surfaces. While they offer increased durability, they still preserve the natural look and feel that make oil finishes so appealing. Choose a drying oil when you want a simple, traditional finish that emphasizes the wood itself. Choose a hard wax oil when greater protection and durability are required. Whether you select tung oil, linseed oil, a modern hard wax oil or another wood-finishing oil, these finishes enhance the beauty of wood while providing practical, long-lasting protection.
