Before watches and clocks were common, people estimated the time by using sundials during the day and star dials at night. Star dials were particularly popular with mariners and navigators during the 16th century. Not only is this star dial easy to use, it is also quite accurate.
To use it, you hold it at arm's length and sight the North Star through the center hole. You then adjust the indicator arm to be in line with the two end stars of the Big Dipper. The time is indicated on the dial by the upper edge of the indicator arm. It works so effectively because the axis of the earth points almost directly at the North Star. This means that the North Star does not change in relationship to the horizon or the viewer, while all the other stars appear to rotate around it. Of course, it is the earth that is rotating as all of the stars remain in fixed position, but that is not how it looks to the viewer.
Beautifully hand made of lead-free bronze, pewter and copper. Measures 1 3/4" overall. Comes with a cord and complete instructions. Makes an attractive and educational gift.
