The great advantage of this style of rule is that it saddles the edge of a workpiece, making it easy to hold accurately in position when measuring and marking layout lines.
Ours have an acute interior angle to ensure that they seat well, even over saw whiskers, and bevelled edges with etched graduations to minimize parallax errors. This design also simplifies transfer of perpendicular lines from face to edge, and is particularly convenient when holding and marking off dowel rod stock.
The wide leg on the L-shaped cross-section is for face work, while the shorter leg is for narrow stock and edge work.
Available in 6", 12", 18" and 24" lengths. The smaller rules have faces with depths of 3/4" and 3/8"; the larger rules have face depths of 1" and 7/16". The face of the wide leg reads left to right, while the short leg reads right to left – making it easy to cross-reference when transferring marks from face to edge.
You can also use the rules on a flat surface – and, since the shape makes them much easier to pick up than a flat rule, you may find yourself reaching for them as your go-to rules. The 6" rule is small enough to fit comfortably in a pocket.
Made in Canada from aluminum with a black anodized finish.
Metric rules are also available.

Yes, the design simplifies the transfer of perpendicular lines from face to edge, and the wide and short legs read in opposite directions for easier cross-referencing.
Yes, the L-section sits higher off the surface than a flat rule, which makes it easier to pick up quickly during layout work.
Yes, Veritas Metric Edge Rules are available in 150 mm, 300 mm, 450 mm, and 600 mm lengths. Combined imperial/metric versions are also available, sold individually and in sets.
Be careful not to drop the edge rule — although the aluminum body is rigid, a damaged edge or corner can affect how accurately it sits against a workpiece.
