Description

This biannual publication celebrates the preservation, research and restoration of historic furniture. Its multi-disciplinary approach brings together the perspectives of furniture makers, conservators and scholars to span woodworking past and present, with focus on pre-industrial tools and methods.

In this issue, author and boatbuilder Douglas Brooks travels to the Nagara River in Japan to learn how to build traditional bamboo fishing boats from the last living master of the craft. Editor Joshua Klein gives a comprehensive lesson on traditional plane making using only ordinary bench tools.

Jordan Goodwin recounts his own journey in blacksmithing. Michael Updegraff describes the benefits of working unplugged with only hand tools, highlighting practices that can help prevent injury. Masashi Kutsuwa travels to Spain to speak to the families of master chairmakers who greatly influenced Japanese handcraft, and Brendan Gaffney provides a detailed tutorial on harvesting ash splint.

Other articles include an examination and comparison of 19th century ladderback chairs, and Joshua Klein’s interview with former Smithsonian Institution furniture conservator Donald C. Williams. Dennis Carter presents a type of joinery developed in the Dalarna region of Sweden, and Cameron Turner reviews Glenn Adamson’s Craft: An American History.

More like a book than a typical magazine, it is printed on heavy stock paper and richly illustrated with color photos.
