Morakniv Slöjd Knife Blade Blanks
This item is not available for this region.
These knife blade blanks are forged near the small Swedish town of Mora, which has been famous for its knives for centuries. Supplied without a handle, the blanks let you create a classic slöjd knife with a custom-shaped handle made from the wood of your choosing.
Derived from a word meaning “ingenious, clever or artful,” slöjd refers to the Swedish craft tradition of making functional, attractive household objects from green wood using only a few basic hand tools. This style of knife is central to the practice.
These blanks are based on a Morakniv design long favored by carvers. They are available with a 2 1/8" blade for detail work or a 3 1/4" blade for heavier cuts. Each is 2.7mm thick (just over 3/32") and made from laminated carbon steel. Like all high-carbon steel blades, they should be wiped clean and dry after use to prevent rust.
Supplied sharpened and ready for mounting, each has a 4 1/4" hidden tang that can be affixed using epoxy. The tang can be press-fitted into a mortise created either by chain-drilling into a solid handle block using a drill press or by cutting a rebate into one half of a two-piece laminated handle.
Rooted in a rich Scandinavian handicraft tradition, it’s a project that offers novices an engaging introduction to carving and a way for an experienced carver to tailor a favorite tool to the hand.
