Beginner Relief Carving

Cavo-relievo, or sunk-relief enclosed carving, is seen in the stone carvings of tombs, obelisks and other monuments of ancient Egypt. For woodcarvers, this technique involves the least amount of wood removal for the greatest relief effect, making it ideal for furniture work when the depth of wood is limited. In this comprehensive overview of relief carving, you will learn proper tool use and basic techniques. You will transfer a pattern onto basswood and learn how to use a carving knife as well as gouges, skew knives and detail knives. All tools and materials provided.

Instructor Bio

Jennifer Marlow discovered her woodcarving skills on the island of Nantucket, where she was drawn by Nathaniel Philbrick's book In the Heart of the Sea. Her first sculptures, made alongside Master Carvers Paul McCarthy and Billy Rowe, were of the whales that played an integral part in both the book and the region's survival. Returning to her native Nova Scotia, Jennifer established her own workshop. In 2005, she was invited back to Nantucket to join McCarthy in the project Going on the Whale, an exterior 10' hand-carved whaling scene that welcomes visitors to the Nantucket Whaling Museum. Her work made the cover and was featured in the British Woodcarvers Association's publication, The Woodcarvers Gazette. Jennifer participates regularly in exhibitions and enjoys working collaboratively with her peers. She is currently represented in Nova Scotian and Nantucket galleries and has commissioned work in the United Kingdom, the Caribbean, Japan, Eurasia and throughout North America. She holds a BA in Music from Dalhousie University.
