A quarterly publication celebrating the art and craft of woodworking by hand, Quercus features the voices of craftspeople and makers from around the world. Named for the genus to which oak belongs, the magazine highlights workmanship and design, woodworking techniques, tools and traditions spanning the centuries.

The feature article of the third issue is a guide for making a modern shaving horse using planed softwood lumber, suitable for a variety of chairmaking tasks. This issue also has an essay by Jögge Sundqvist on the history and philosophy of slöjd and traditional Finnish handicrafts, an interview with Alasdair Kilpatrick about his accessible woodworking education program for special-needs students, and a ranking of the top 10 spokeshaves recommended by readers.

Richard Arnold analyzes a centuries-old toolbox, passed down from his father and a chain of other woodworkers, to deduce its original owner’s trade and working conditions.

Dylan Iwakuni reveals his approach to marking work and planing end grain, Mary May gives an in-depth guide to sharpening gouges, and Robin Gates experiments with toothed metal and wood in search of the ideal planing stop.

There are also informative articles from experts on a diverse array of topics that include steam bending for Windsor chairs, fitting an axe handle, turning a woodworking hobby into a profitable small business, and much more.
