A quarterly publication celebrating the art and craft of woodworking by hand, Quercus features the voices of craftspeople and makers from around the world. Named for the genus to which oak belongs, the magazine highlights workmanship and design, woodworking techniques, tools and traditions spanning the centuries.

This issue features editor Nick Gibbs’ interview with toolmaker Thomas Lie-Nielsen, who describes early influences in his career and shares insights on tools and the business of making them.

John Lloyd describes various chisel types and cuts. Derek Cohen cuts dovetails and assembles a drawer designed by David Charlesworth, and Robin Gates makes a chisel plane from spalted beech.

In an excerpt from their book, Euclid’s Door, co-authors George Walker and Jim Tolpin explain how making your own layout tools fosters a deeper understanding of the geometry fundamental to woodworking. Martin Sturfält describes his learning journey as he tackles projects for a newly built log-frame home, and Ethan Sincox affirms the value of giving and receiving feedback through peer review.

Other contributors to this issue include Christopher Wilson on Moravian woodworking, Charles Mak on ways to use holdfasts, and Bill Ratcliffe on the qualities of fish glue.
