Launched as a quarterly magazine but now published bimonthly, Quercus celebrates the art and craft of woodworking by hand, featuring the voices of craftspeople and makers from around the world. Named for the genus to which oak belongs, the magazine highlights workmanship and design, woodworking techniques, tools and traditions spanning the centuries.

This issue features Nick Gibbs’ profile of Robin Wood, craftsman, instructor, toolmaker and recipient of an MBE for services to Heritage Crafts and Skills in the U.K. Highlights include Robin’s influence in promoting traditional handcraft and his toolmaking endeavors.

In other articles, John Lloyd discusses hand planing using shop-made removable stops, and Robin Gates looks at mobile tool storage in the form of toolboxes, tool bags and holsters. Klemen Urbanija shows how to make whistles from fresh saplings.

Deneb Puchalski builds a dovetailed box to hold a block plane, and Rex Krueger focuses on features of vintage cast-iron saw vises. Using the techniques of traditional Japanese sawyers, Dylan Iwakuni hand-mills lumber.

Also in this issue, Henrie van Rooij constructs his own custom workbench, Ethan Sincox delves into collecting vintage screws and screw gauges, Bill Ratcliffe reviews Knew Concepts saws, Charles Mak gives tips on various applications for an edge-trimming plane, and more.
