A T-nut is a flanged fastener with sharp prongs that embed in wood, giving a permanent threaded point that won't spin loose the way a surface-mounted nut can.
Drill a 5/16" pilot hole, then press or tap the flange down until it's flush and the four prongs bite into the surface. These four-prong T-nuts (1/4-20 thread) then accept a 1/4-20 bolt or knob right away.
Support the workpiece from behind so the prongs seat evenly, then drive the flange flush before threading in a bolt. This four-prong style works well in both hardwood and softwood without excessive splitting.
