Milk Paints

Traditional milk paint is one of the oldest finishes, historically made from milk, lime and earth pigments. Modern milk paint uses powdered milk protein (casein) combined with natural pigments to create a durable, attractive finish. Mixed with water before use, it offers exceptional versatility. By adjusting the amount of water, you can create anything from a translucent wash that allows the grain to show through to a fully opaque finish that conceals it. It dries to a matte, chalky texture that can be left as is or burnished with a drying oil or paste wax for a richer, smoother appearance. Milk paint is particularly valued for its ability to develop character. Applying a dark base coat beneath lighter colors creates depth, and selectively rubbing through the top layers can mimic the natural wear found on antique furniture. Tinted waxes further enhance this effect, while a layer of diluted hide or fish glue between coats can be used to create a crackled finish. Ideal for furniture, cabinetry, toys and decorative objects, milk paint lends warmth and authenticity to both traditional and contemporary work. It ages gracefully, so any future wear often adds to rather than detracts from its appearance.
