Drop handles are set below the level of the blade rather than in line with it. This positions the user's hands lower, giving a more natural grip angle and making it easier to take controlled, smooth shavings – particularly when working at a shaving horse.
The Austrian drawknife is suited for shaping and stock removal tasks such as chair legs, spindles and handles, as well as general log building and debarking work. Its compact size makes it well suited to precise shaping rather than heavy bulk removal.
Drawknives are sharpened on the flat bevel face using a sharpening stone or a specialized sharpening guide such as the Galbert Drawsharp. Hone the flat back to remove the burr. Work carefully with the edge exposed.
