The bevel-up configuration of our low-angle block plane lets you vary the blade angle to suit the task, from low-angle blades for use on end grain to high-angle blades on figured wood. However, steeper cutting angles require more force to push the plane.
We offer an inexpensive vertical tote that, when used with a front knob, adapts our low angle block plane into a small bevel-up smoothing plane that can work a wide variety of woods, providing the firm hold and greater leverage needed to plane difficult wood. Used with these simple retrofits, the plane works similarly to a #3 smoothing plane for small-scale work, working in tight areas, and for use by children or those with small hands or less strength. Combined with a selection of optional blades, they convert our low-angle block plane into a highly versatile plane that is easy and comfortable to use.
The tote is made of torrefied maple.

The plane then works similarly to a #3 smoother – useful for small workpieces, tight areas and for anyone who finds a standard block plane grip insufficient for steeper cutting angles.
The bevel-up design of the Veritas low-angle block plane lets you vary the effective cutting angle by choosing different blade bevel angles. Higher effective angles reduce tear-out on difficult or figured wood, but also require more forward pushing force. The vertical tote provides a firmer, higher grip that makes applying that force easier and more controlled.
No, the front knob is available separately. For the smoothing plane conversion to work well, both the vertical tote and the front knob should be installed together.
Torrefied maple is maple that has been heat-treated to drive out moisture and change the wood's structure. The result is a dimensionally stable material that is less prone to swelling or shrinking with humidity changes – a practical choice for hand tool handles that are handled frequently.
