A commercial sharpening service or a sophisticated home grinder is necessary for badly nicked blades. The Veritas jointer blade sharpener is designed to restore blades dulled from normal use, even if they contain minor nicks.
It clamps blades up to 8" wide (including hand-plane blades) for sharpening on PSA-backed abrasives. Just stick the abrasive to a flat surface (plate glass works well), adjust the elevating screw until the bevel is flat on the abrasive, and use it as you would any other honing guide. After basic sharpening, switch to a fine abrasive, and hone a fine micro-bevel. Two position stops ensure that successive blades are honed identically. It is both easy and effective, letting you quickly restore blades that you would probably let become far duller before sending out for service.
Made of cast aluminum with brass and steel fittings. It comes with a half sheet (5 1/2" × 8 1/2") of 9 micron (aprox. 1200 grit) 3M micro-abrasive film.

No, the jig works with PSA-backed abrasive sheets adhered to any flat surface such as plate glass. You use it as you would a honing guide on a bench stone – hold the jig against the abrasive and slide it back and forth to sharpen the bevel.
Adjust the elevating screw until the bevel of the blade lies flat on the abrasive surface, then lock the setting. The two position stops allow you to reclamp the blade at the same angle for subsequent sessions or when honing additional blades from the same set.
Jointer and planer cutterheads use matched sets of blades that must all be honed to the same angle and projection to keep the cutterhead balanced. The two position stops ensure successive blades are honed identically, reducing the risk of vibration or uneven cutting after reinstallation.
A half sheet (5 1/2" × 8 1/2") of 9-micron (approximately 1200-grit) 3M micro-abrasive film is included. Additional abrasive sheets are available separately for ongoing maintenance.
