This biography chronicles the life of James Krenov (1920-2009), designer, cabinetmaker, author, teacher and influential figure in the 20th century studio furniture movement. Beginning with A Cabinetmaker’s Notebook (1976), Krenov’s books introduced a wider audience to his unique approach and thoughts on the craftsperson’s role in society, and continue to inspire woodworkers today.
Gaffney draws upon memoirs, letters, first-hand accounts, archival photos and Krenov’s own writings for rich biographical details of the Russian-born artisan, from his early life in China and America to his attendance at the Malmsten furniture school in Stockholm, where his passion for woodworking found direction.
Eventually moving back to America, Krenov continued to make furniture, teach and publish, and in the early 1980s, he founded a fine furniture program at what is now called The Krenov School in California. Gaffney’s book includes a color photo gallery of selected Krenov pieces spanning his woodworking career and exhibiting his development as a designer.
