This updated, enhanced edition of Alexander’s classic 1978 text takes you step by step through the process of creating the post-and-rung two-slat chair known to many as the Jennie Chair or JA Chair.

More than a how-to, the book is filled with the author’s insights and methods developed over decades of studying antique chairs, collaborating with woodworkers and teaching chairmaking.

Topics covered include choosing, splitting, riving and hewing green wood, building a variety of jigs such as a riving brake and a back post bending form, and shaving chair posts and rungs using a drawknife. The author explains how moisture and wood movement interrelate in creating strong chair joints and describes how to weave seats with harvested hickory bark.

Alexander’s engaging text is supplemented with color photos as well as commentary and personal anecdotes from various contributors. A practical guide to green-wood chairmaking, the book also offers a glimpse into the work of a lifelong chairmaker and her contribution to the craft.

Smyth-sewn hardcover, 9" × 9", 184 pages, 2021.
