Harvested from the Agave lechuguilla plant and commonly known as ixtle, Tampico fiber is a natural material native to the high desert regions of northern Mexico. The plant’s long, resilient fibers are valued for their durability and soft to medium texture, making them ideal for hand-crafted brooms and brushes.

Stiffer than animal hair but still flexible, Tampico holds its shape well. The fibers can be bent in half for staple-set brushes or hand-wrapped into broom heads, and once formed, they retain their set curves and bends. This natural “memory” makes Tampico durable for both sweeping and scrubbing applications. (To maintain their shape, finished brooms should be hung up for storage rather than resting on their bristles.)

Each 3" diameter bundle provides enough fiber for two to four small brushes, depending on design. The natural fiber measures about 10" long (approx. 1.75 lb per bundle), while the black-dyed version is about 6 1/2" long (approx. 1.1 lb per bundle) and slightly stiffer – ideal for push brooms or heavier-duty work.Use Tampico with your own offcuts or explore our selection of wooden dowels, bowl blanks and 1 1/2" blanks, well suited for brush handles.
