HORL’s Quick Lock discs let you adapt the sharpening sequence to the condition of the knife and the degree of refinement you want to achieve.
The coarse and standard diamond discs use durable monocrystalline abrasive that retains its cutting action even on hard steels. Both remove metal and establish the bevel. The ceramic disc removes the burr and refines the grinding pattern. Fine, extra-fine and Kagami discs then provide progressively smoother finishes. Compatible with HORL 3 sharpeners equipped with the Quick Lock system, all are used dry with no water or oil as lubricant.
The coarse diamond disc removes material more quickly than the standard disc, making it useful for restoring a very dull knife, correcting minor edge damage or changing a blade to a different bevel angle. Once the new bevel has been established, continue with the standard diamond and ceramic discs, followed by finer discs if desired.
The standard diamond disc is the primary abrasive supplied with HORL 3 sharpeners. It removes material efficiently but in a controlled manner, making it suitable for establishing a bevel and for routine resharpening. The industrial-diamond abrasive is suitable for kitchen-knife steels across a broad range of hardnesses. Used after the diamond disc, this smooth ceramic disc refines the grinding pattern and removes the burr raised during sharpening.
A few light passes on each side of the blade leave a clean, even working edge suitable for most kitchen use.
For a more highly refined finish, it can be followed by the fine corundum disc, which further smooths the grinding pattern and refines the cutting edge. It is particularly useful on high-quality kitchen knives where a smoother bevel and more precise cutting feel are desirable.
The extra-fine corundum disc follows the fine disc to further smooth the bevel and produce a more highly refined cutting edge. It is intended for users who want to go beyond a general-purpose working edge, particularly on hard, thin-bladed kitchen knives used for precise cutting.
The finest abrasive in the HORL system, the Kagami ultra-fine disc is used to produce a highly polished bevel and an exceptionally refined cutting edge, completing the sequence by polishing the bevel to a mirror-like finish.
All are made in Germany.
