Widely used in metal machining, M42 high-speed steel is also an excellent material for wood-turning tools. The “M” refers to molybdenum, which provides strength and toughness, but what really sets this alloy apart is the addition of 10% cobalt, allowing it to be hardened to a much greater degree than other HSS alloys. Additionally, these tools are cryogenically treated to further toughen them to prevent brittleness. The resulting tools take an excellent edge and are highly durable, making for clean cuts and less-frequent sharpening.
A square-end scraper creates flat surfaces that need minimal sanding, as well as sharp inside corners on boxes and hollow forms. This scraper is ground from substantial 1/4" thick bar stock to reduce chatter. Its 6 3/4" blade is mounted to a 10" black-lacquered ash handle fitted with a copper ferrule. Hardened to Rc66-69.
Made by Crown in Sheffield, England, it is finely finished and comes with a lifetime guarantee.
